We recently held a FREE health check in a local community. We aimed at taking people’s blood pressure, checking their heart rate/pulse, the rhythm, and the oxygen saturation. It was a great success as an introduction to the Being a Healthy Community Project. What we learnt was that people weren’t sure about what each check meant and that some people where apprehensive about getting a check.
What I want to share is that your hearts condition is what it is and having a check done does not change, improve or deteriorate your condition. What it will do is alert your attention to something unpleasant and also preventative happening.
When we take your blood pressure we are checking that the pressure in your arteries flow under 140/90mmHg. If it is higher this can put you at risk of heart disease and stroke. By discussing your lifestyle we can make life changing improvements at your pace.
We check your pulse to check your heart is beating in time and also not too often. We aim for a steady pulse and a heart rate of 60 – 100 beats per minute. Being below and above may require medical attention.
The day was a success and we were able to educate people on their heart health, provided leaflets, gained insight into what would be beneficial from a patients perspective and equally important identified several individuals who lay out with recommended ranges.
